A Day in the Life #3

It is hard to believe it is Monday already. Working on Saturday and Sunday really makes the weekend fly by. I would recap my weekend for you guys, but it wasn’t an exciting one, and I didn’t really take much for pictures. I spent the evenings hanging out with my family, and the days working. I also went for a long run on Sunday morning. Long as in four miles, but that is the longest run I have gone on yet for half marathon training. I was a little bit nervous about running that far, but it actually felt pretty easy. I wore a fuel belt full of water to get used to running with the weight, and I improved my average speed per mile by 10 seconds. Also, it was super slippery outside and I had to take it slow in quite a few areas, so I was really happy with my time.

Blurry run photo – I didn’t stop to take it!

Anyways, since I am not going to share much about my weekend, I thought I would share my “Day in the Life Post” that I meant to post on Friday. As I mentioned on the weekend, life got in the way, and I didn’t end up posting. This is an example of a fairly typical Thursday for Lochlyn and I.

4:50 – Josh nudges me in bed to let me know my alarm is going off. I am a deep sleeper and he usually hears it first. I reach over and press the snooze button. Anything before 5:00 is too early.

5:00 – My alarm goes off again. I drag myself out of bed, and remember that I am getting up to go for a run. I get excited (I’m a weirdo) and feel slightly more awake. I get ready to go, start the truck to let it defrost a bit, and grab half a banana to snack on.

5:30 – I leave my warm, cozy house and drive in the dark to the gym.

5:40 – I run on the treadmill at the gym for three miles. Since I have been feeling like I have a bit of the cold, I take it fairly easy. I ran at a speed of 5.5 and an incline of 0.5. I think my pace was 10:54/mile. This seems to be a fairly easy/comfortable pace for me.

6:30 – I get home form the gym and immediately make a cherry smoothie and then top it with the last of the Maple Sesame Granola. If you haven’t noticed yet, I have a smoothie every time after I work out. I love them, I crave them after workouts, and they never get old for me.

cherry granola smoothie

I drank my smoothie while I stretched and then foam rolled. While I did this I watched the beginning of When Harry Met Sally. I had actually never seen it before.

foam rolling

7:00 – I get my butt up off my yoga matt, turn off the movie, and start writing Thursday’s post. Sometimes I have to motivate myself to blog, other days I am so excited to write. Either way, I almost always end up enjoying it. If I’m not feeling it, I just don’t do it (as you can probably tell by the lack of posts some days).

8:00 – I publish the post. Lochlyn is still sleeping so I quickly hop in the shower before she wakes up. She normally wakes up around 8:00.

8:15 – I get out of the shower and dry off. Then I realize I haven’t booked Lochlyn in with childcare at the gym yet for Friday. I have to book the day before, and Fridays tend to be busy, so I call to book her in. Afterwards, I clean up my smoothie mess and check the recipe that I plan on making in the crockpot for dinner that night.

8:30 – Lochlyn starts stirring. I top up my water and go in to nurse her. She isn’t fully awake, but I find that if she sleeps in too long she misses her first nap. I nurse my groggy girl and then change her diaper.

9:15 – Breakfast time! Even though I had a smoothie not too long ago, I find I am pretty hungry. Banana, egg white oatmeal for me, topped with peanut butter. Lochlyn is having oatmeal, parsnips, carrots, apple and greek yogurt.

mom and baby oats

9:30 – Lochlyn and I eat our breakfast together. She takes forever to eat, so while I am waiting for her to finish I make a pot of coffee and tidy up the kitchen

breakfast smiles

10:00 – My baby girl is done eating. I clean her up, and take her upstairs to do laundry and have a quick cuddle before it’s nap time.

10:15 – I go through Lochlyn’s nap time routine and then put her down for her first nap of the day. She falls asleep right away.

10:30 – While Lochlyn naps I make Crockpot Vegetable Korma for dinner. It was pretty easy to make but it took me awhile since I had to be ninja quiet so Lochlyn didn’t wake up.

11:00 – Dinner is all prepped and ready to go. I take a load of laundry downstairs to fold in front of the movie I started earlier. I am still feeling a bit sick and plan to relax and take it easy today. I also enjoy the coffee I made earlier.

11:30 – My mom calls to have a chat, so I turn off the movie and talk to her for a bit.

11:45 – Lochlyn is awake. I head upstairs to nurse her.

12:30 – After breastfeeding it is time for lunch. I have some leftovers from a wild rice and turkey sausage casserole I made a couple nights ago. Lochlyn has avocado, green beans and sweet potato.

1:00 – I clean up our lunch mess and the mess I made while getting dinner into the crockpot. I also tidy up the main floor as I plan to vacuum and there are toys everywhere!

1:15 – It’s vacuuming time. Lochlyn plays in her playpen and watches me vacuum like a crazy person. We have laminate flooring and I have to move all the furniture and vacuum under everything or it gets crazy dusty. It takes me awhile and is a lot of work! When I am almost finished Lochlyn starts to get fussy in her playpen. I pick her up and carry her while I finish the last of the vacuuming. This is no easy task – she is getting so big!

playpen wave

She is waving for the camera here

2:00 – It is beautiful and sunny outside so I decide to take Lochlyn for a quick walk before nap time. I am still in my pyjamas (don’t judge!), so I rush around the house like a crazy person getting changed and getting Lochlyn ready to go. We don’t have much time before her nap so I keep her in her pyjamas and just throw a jacket on her. I don’t even bother to change her diaper, which hasn’t been changed for a couple hours (again, don’t judge!).

2:10 – Lochlyn and I leave the house to go for a quick walk around the block. I want to be home by 2:30 to get her ready for her afternoon nap. We walk through a park by our house, and as I am on the way home, I notice that Lochlyn is nodding off. By the time we are on our street, Lochlyn is sound asleep. Since she has been sick lately, I don’t have the heart to wake her. I know she needs all the rest she can get. I decide to keep walking, so we start to head towards the lake by our house. A couple blocks in she starts to wake up, so we turn around and head home. A block from our house, Lochlyn is sleeping again! I debate taking her home and trying to put her down in her crib, but it is so hard to get Lochlyn to do back to sleep once you wake her up.

warm winter walk

In the end I decide to just keep walking with her. She ended up sleeping in her stroller for over an hour and 20 minutes! It was great to enjoy the fresh air and warm weather, but I hadn’t planned to walk that long and I was unprepared. I had no water, and not the best shoes on. Also I had wanted to take it easy that day since I was getting over a cold. Lochlyn didn’t even have mittens or a toque on. Oops!

beautiful winter walk

3:45 – Lochlyn woke up around 3:30, so I quickly headed for home. Once we got there I changed Lochlyn out of her diaper that should have been changed two hours before. Sorry baby! I also quickly threw a salad together to snack on. All that exercise made me hungry!

4:00 – I nursed Lochlyn and watched more of When Harry Met Sally. I think I liked this movie? Kind of? It was a little too much of a chick flick for me, but it was cute. I have to admit I’m not a huge fan of Billy Crystal though.

4:25 – Lochlyn didn’t eat that well so I pumped afterwards. I sat in the glider chair in Lochlyn’s room and she played at my feet. Lately she wants to be as close to me as possible at all times. I love it.

lochlyn playing at my feet

4:45 – I finished pumping, and I pulled out the mop to finish cleaning the floors before Josh got home. Lochlyn played in her playpen again so she wasn’t crawling all over the wet floors. I pulled Lochlyn out of her playpen while I waited for each section of the floor to dry and we played peekaboo and “Ride the Horsey” together.

5:30 – Just as I finished mopping, Josh got home from work. I put some salmon in the over for dinner. The vegetables I made earlier seemed like they would be really flavourful so I just added some dill and lemon to the salmon and kept it nice and simple.

5:45 – Josh, Lochlyn and I all hang out and Josh and I talk about our days.

6:15 – Dinner is ready. We are having leftover brown rice, the Vegetable Korma I made earlier, and baked salmon. Everything is good, but the Korma really stole the show. I highly recommend this recipe. I used less of the spices and salt, and it still had so much flavour. Josh isn’t a big fan of curry or vegetables and he loved it, and Lochlyn wouldn’t stop eating it. She has since devoured a ton of the leftovers too! After dinner we tidy up the kitchen together.

6:45 – I head upstairs with Lochlyn while Josh finishes the dishes, and we tidy up her room and play (which simultaneously messes up her room again!).

7:00 – I quickly take some laundry out of the wash and put away what I fold early. I also get myself ready for bed. I like to do this early before Lochlyn goes to sleep so I don’t have to worry about being extra quiet later.

7:30 – I change Lochlyn, and get her pyjamas and sleep sack on.

7:45 – Breastfeeding time and then Lochlyn and I go through her bedtime routine and I put her to bed. She falls asleep almost right away.

8:30 – I head downstairs and say goodnight to Josh. He is watching youtube videos on the computer I think? I can’t exactly remember.

8:45 – I climb into bed and read for a few minutes before turning off the light. It is an early night for me, but I am trying to get lots of sleep to help me fight this cold.

That was my day. Pretty standard Thursday except for that super long walk thrown in there. I am glad that we got out, the weather has been so beautiful, I need to enjoy it while it lasts. My cold is gone now, so maybe the fresh air did me some good!

What is the weather like where you live?

WIAW #1: Honoring My Hunger

Yesterday I talked about the second principle in the book Intuitive Eating; honoring your hunger. I mentioned that I was going to pay attention to my hunger levels when I ate this week and keep track of them. I thought sharing them with you today as part of What I Ate Wednesday would be a good way to keep myself accountable. So, without further ado, I am linking up with Peas and Crayons for WIAW. Thank you Jenn for hosting!

what i ate wednesday

I have mentioned before on the blog that I didn’t think that WIAW was the best thing for me to participate in. This is because I felt that I wouldn’t be “real” with what I was eating if I knew I was going to have to share it. I did find this was the case a little bit, so I want to come clean.

Taking pictures of what I was eating, and recording my hunger levels, did make me think twice about putting something in my mouth. This may be a good thing, or a bad thing, but I want my readers to be aware of it. Usually I am a lot more snacky than I was yesterday, and eat with a lot less thought. This is something that I do want to work on, so I think that recording my hunger levels is helping. My issue with recording anything is that I am such a perfectionist and I want to do everything perfect. If I mess up and forget to record a meal I often throw in the towel and eat whatever I want mindlessly. I am not recording my hunger levels so that I will eat perfectly. I am doing it to help myself pay more attention to my body and how it is feeling while I am eating.

Here is the hunger scale that I used. This is adapted from the book Intuitive Eating (p. 64).

0-1: Empty

2: Ravenous

3: Set

4: Pangs

5: Neutral

6-7: Satisfied

8: Full

9: Stuffed

10: Sick

Here is my day of eats from yesterday. Please excuse my food photography skills. I am still learning to take photos, and I don’t have a lot of time to snap them while I am running around with Lochlyn. I intend to get better at this!

I woke up yesterday morning at 6:15 am and immediately started writing this blog. I noticed right away that I was feeling hungry, but decided to put off eating for a bit so I could get yesterday’s post typed up. Usually when I first wake up I can hold off eating for a while, so I was a little bit annoyed. Yesterday’s post was about honoring my hunger, so eventually I knew I needed to give in and do just that. I wanted to have breakfast a little later when Lochlyn woke up, so I opted for a snack to tide me over

7:30 AM – hunger level 3

yogurt mess

Plain Greek yogurt, sprinkled with oats, almond flour and cinnamon, and drizzled with honey.

Lochlyn woke up around 8:00. I nursed her, got her ready for the day, and then made both of us some breakfast.

9:15 AM – hunger level 4.5

banana eggwhite oatmeal

My favorite oatmeal. 1/4 cup of quick oats, 1/4 cup of oat bran, 1/4 cup of egg whites, 1 cup of almond milk, 1 really ripe banana. Topped with lots of cinnamon and peanut butter and another splash of almond milk. Yummy.

After breakfast and cleaning up my little one, I let Lochlyn play on the floor for a while I did some laundry and started to get ready for the day. Then I put Lochlyn down for her nap, and listened to her play and whine in her crib while I finished getting ready. I checked on her every 10 minutes or so to make sure she was ok. She never ended up falling asleep. Crazy girl.

While Lochlyn was not napping in her crib, I cleaned the bathroom and assembled cloth diapers. At around 11:30 I decided she probably wasn’t going to sleep. I microwaved some leftovers for lunch so I could eat while I nursed her. I was planning on being at the gym around 1:00, and I wanted time to digest my food a bit before I made it there.

11:45 AM – hunger level 4.5

leftover basil pasta

Leftover Vegetable and edamame pasta with basil cream sauce from Oh She Glows.

Lochlyn ended up falling asleep on my boob, and I let her nap in my arms for about half an hour. Then I got her up, got her ready for the gym, and fed her lunch. I was still feeling a bit hungry, and I didn’t want to run out of energy at the gym, so I helped myself to another serving of leftover pasta that went unpictured.

1:00 PM – hunger level 4.5

More leftover pasta.

We finished eating, and I realized we were running really late. It was already almost 1:30 and I wanted to be at the gym at 1. I bundled Lochlyn up in her jacket, toque and mitts, and then realized that Josh took my truck to work and I forgot to take the car seat out of it. I really wanted to get out of the house, so I decided to walk to the gym instead.

cold hands

I was in such a rush to get out of the door I forgot to grab a jacket or gloves, and it was cold! At least Lochlyn was really bundled up in her stroller.

cold walk

I worked out at the gym from 2-3 and then Lochlyn and I walked home. At home, I tucked her in for her second nap of the day, and then made a delicious smoothie to tide me over until dinner. I find that I need to eat something after working out or I get really shaky. My go-to is almost always a smoothie, even when it is freezing outside.

3:30 PM – hunger level 4

smoothie girl

Banana smoothie – inspired by Running with Spoons Oatmeal cookie dough smoothie. Please excuse my blurry, sweaty picture and bad nails!

While I waited for Lochlyn to fall asleep, I watched Suits on Netflix, drank my smoothie and stretched. I have been really neglecting stretching lately, and my body is sure feeling it. I also checked in on Lochlyn every 10 minutes or so until she fell asleep at around 4:00.

Once I finished my smoothie I hopped in the shower. More Suits was watched while I dusted my basement and waited for Lochlyn to wake up.

After her nap, I breast fed Lochlyn, then made dinner for both of us. Josh had to make a trip to Calgary and he left right after work, so he wouldn’t be home until later. We were on our own for dinner, which usually means something easy and fast. Lochlyn had leftover noodles and peas. She also had some grated apple and coconut butter for desert, which tasted amazing (I stole a bite). Her dinner most definitely looked better than mine.

6:00 PM – hunger level 4

avocado toast with egg

Toast with mashed avocado, garlic powder, salt and pepper topped with easy-over eggs. I also had a side of cucumbers and tzatziki dip to get some veggies in.

That was it for my eats for the day. After dinner I gave Lochlyn a bath. Then we played together while I put some laundry away and dusted her room. Before I knew it, it was time for Lochlyn to go to bed. I fed her and put her down for the night. Josh got home shortly after and he helped me clean up the kitchen a bit, then we headed to bed too.

bath babe

That was my day! What was supposed to be a WIAW post, is looking a lot like a day in the life post!

I really enjoyed keeping track of my hunger levels yesterday. It is interesting to see that I rarely let myself get very hungry. I think that this is because I usually eat with Lochlyn, rather than waiting until I am really hungry to eat. I enjoy eating with her, and it is time-efficient, since I am sitting down to feed her anyways. Also, I want to set a good example for her at meal times, and eating in front of her helps keep me accountable with establishing healthy eating habits.

What I could possibly do to help ensure that I am eating when I am hungry is cut down my serving sizes a little. I may do this, but I am not too worried about it. Yesterday I didn’t overeat, or end up eating when I was already full.

Like I mentioned above. I don’t think this reflects a typical eating day for me. Usually I am a lot more snacky in-between meals. I have a habit of just grabbing whatever is easy out of the kitchen when I am bored and not very hungry. I do plan to record my hunger levels for the rest of the week. Hopefully this will help me get into the habit of checking with my body more before I grab something from the kitchen!

Have a great Wednesday!

Have you ever recorded a full day of food? If so, do you find that it affects the way that you eat?

What is your go-to, easy dinner, when you are only cooking for yourself? If you didn’t already guess, mine is eggs!

A Typical Tuesday …

So, people always ask me if I am losing my mind by staying home all day. I guess they picture me cooped up inside the house with nothing to do but listen to a baby crying and change diapers. I can understand. Before I had a baby, I thought I would be able to get so much stuff done in the day. I planned to have a perfectly clean house, and to always cook everything from scratch.  I would get my house perfectly organized, while simultaneously finishing my degree. On top of all this I would spend a ton of time playing with my baby and taking her on all kinds of fun outings. I mean I would have 40 hours a week extra that I wasn’t working right? Haha.

I have seen some “day in the life posts” on other mom’s blogs including Tina’s and Ashley’s, and I have enjoyed reading them. I thought it would be fun to do one of a typical Tuesday for Lochlyn and I. This is what our day looked like yesterday…

6:30 am – I wake up to Josh watching a youtube video on his phone. I freak out because I don’t want him to wake Lochlyn up, so I get up, and tell him to be quiet.

6:45 am – I put on some make-up as we are heading out for a bit today. Before I had a baby I spent so much more time on my makeup and was really creative with it. Now it is pretty minimal and almost the same every day.

unnamed-7

7:15 am – Make coffee – I don’t drink coffee everyday. I actually stopped altogether when I was pregnant and only recently started drinking decaf. I am too scared to drink much with caffeine since I am still nursing and it can affect breast milk. I really felt like a coffee this morning. While waiting for the coffee to brew, I take some homemade baby food out of the freezer for Lochlyn’s meals for the day.  I also do a quick tidy, and then drink my coffee at the computer while I do some online banking.

unnamed-10

8:15 am – I hear Lochlyn waking up so I quickly finish the banking and then go get her and nurse her. Lochlyn is the slowest eater ever when it comes to breast feeding. She takes 35-45 minutes. I always let her eat as long as she wants because she is small for her age, and I want to make sure she is growing enough. While Lochlyn is nursing I read some blogs on my phone.

9:15 am – It’s breakfast time and I am hungry! I make a egg/egg white scramble with zucchini, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes and a ton of feta. I eat while spoon-feeding Lochlyn. She has peas and rice cereal – not really breakfast food but this girl doesn’t care!

unnamed-13 unnamed-14

9:45 am – I get Lochlyn dressed and ready for the day. I also change out of my p.j’s and throw my hair back into a ponytail.

10:00 am – We rush out the door to our weekly mom and baby group. It starts at 10 so we are a little bit late.

10:45 am – We end up having to leave the group early. Lochlyn usually has a nap around 10 or 10:30, and she is fussy and tired.

unnamed-24

11:00 am – We get home and I put lochlyn down for her first nap. This involves me carrying her car seat with her in it, and walking around our house until she falls asleep. I turn the vacuum on for some white noise action. I also simultaneously eat some dark chocolate – multitasking!

11:15 am – Once Lochlyn falls asleep I quickly clean the bathroom, tidy our mess from breakfast, and work on the blog.

11:45 am– Lochlyn wakes up. She pretty much always naps for half an hour. I hope that she learns to nap longer soon! I nurse, while I read a book.

12:45 pm – I make a big salad for lunch out of whatever I can find in my fridge. I start with kale and top it with brocolli slaw, cucmber and celery, coconut rice, roast turkey slices, avocado and sunflower seeds. I used olive oil and pink grapefruit balsamic vineagrette as a homemade dressing. Lochlyn and I eat lunch together, and she has sweet potato and avocado. I would say she loves avocado, but this girl loves everything! I can’t figure out what her favorite foods are because she gobbles up everything I give her.

unnamed-15 unnamed-16

1:15 pm – I put a load of laundry in, then Lochlyn and I play on the floor while I assemble some of her cloth diapers. Eeyore joins in and Lochlyn is so happy. She loves that cat. (Our real cat, not the toy!)

unnamed-17

2:00 pm – Lochlyn is getting pretty fussy so I put her down for a nap #2. She typically doesn’t last much longer than 2 hours of being awake before she is tired. I put her in the car seat and carry her around again.

2:15 pm – Once she falls asleep I clean up the kitchen from lunch.

2:30 pm – I don’t get too much cleaning done because Lochlyn wakes up. I nurse her while eating a pre-workout snack. Plain yogurt, oats, cinnamon and honey. This is my favorite thing to eat pre-workout, but I need some new ideas! I have this almost every day. I find that if I don’t eat before working out I get pretty shaky before my workout is over.

unnamed-18

3:15 pm – I change into gym clothes, and change Lochlyn’s clothes since she spit up on them earlier. I also take the load of laundry out of the washing machine.

3:45 pm – Lochlyn and I leave for the gym.

4:00 pm – I drop Lochlyn off in childcare and then workout. The childcare at my gym is awesome. I like taking Lochlyn later in the day because it is almost empty! There were only three kids there, so she got lots of attention.

I do a HIIT workout on the treadmil that involved 20 sec. of hill sprints followed by 40 sec. of walking at an incline. After the treadmill I do another 20 minutes on the bike, increasing the intensity every 30 seconds until I am at my max. I do a full minute at my maximum intensity and then start back at a easy level and repeat. I love strength training, but sometimes I am all about the cardio. Today I was really feeling it and I had a great workout.

4:45 pm – I pick Lochlyn up from childcare, and we head home. On the way we stop at a health food store to look for millet. I have heard that millet makes good baby cereal, but I have yet to find any. The health food store is a small, local business, and doesn’t stock millet. Oh well!

5:00 pm – We get home and I make a smoothie out of a banana, about half a cup of mixed berries, unflavoured protein powder and almond milk. Smoothies after a workout just never get old for me!

unnamed-19

5:15 pm – I drink/eat my smoothie (I like them extra thick) while I nurse Lochlyn. She normally has a nap after the gym, but we are a little behind schedule so I decide to skip her nap and feed her right away.

6:15 pm – It’s Lochlyn’s dinner time. She is having carrots and barley cereal. She prefers to feed herself and always tries to grab the spoon while I am feeding her. This can get really messy! Usually Josh gets home around 5:30 and he feeds her dinner while I shower. Today  he is working late and then he is going to a movie for a friend’s birthday.

unnamed-20

6:30 pm – I make myself dinner.  Tofu stirfry with feta cheese. This is a go-to meal of mine when I am only cooking for myself. I plan on posting this super easy recipe so stay tuned! I eat while Lochlyn hangs out with Eeyore in the Jolly Jumper.

unnamed-22 unnamed-21

7:00 pm – I squeeze in a quick shower. Lochlyn hangs out in her rocker chair in the bathroom and cries the whole time. She HATES it when I shower. Eeyore sits outside the bathroom door and also whines the whole time. Showers are a lot less enjoyable around here when Josh isn’t home to keep the baby and cat entertained!

7:15 pm – I brush Lochlyn’s teeth, put her pajamas on, read her a bedtime story and say her prayers. We are trying to establish a bedtime routine with the hopes that it will help her to fall asleep easier at night. I usually aim to start this around 7, but tonight is a bit behind schedule since Josh isn’t home to help.

7:30 pm – I nurse Lochlyn in the dark, trying to be extra quiet so she has the chance to wind down from the day. I used to feed her to sleep, but we are working on her putting her down awake and letting her fall asleep by herself.

8:15 pm – Lochlyn is done eating, I change her diaper, give her some cuddles and put her to bed. She is extra tired and falls alseep right away. Yes!

8:30 pm – I type up this post, while eating a bowl of cereal. I didn’t take a picture because I forgot about the bowl for awhile and it went all soggy and gross looking. Soggy cereal tastes the best!

9:45 pm – Still typing up this post. These day in the life posts are a lot of work! Josh just got home and my cell phone has died with all my pictures on it so I decide to finish the post in the morning.

10:00 pm – I get ready for bed, and read in bed for awhile. Josh and I often read for a bit together before bed.

10:15 pm – Lights out! I go to sleep. I used to always go to bed around 9:00, but now that Lochlyn is sleeping really well I have found myself staying up until 10:00 or 10:30.

Any pre-workout snack ideas for me?

Soggy cereal – yay or nay?
